Development of the Bioeconomy Centre of Excellence at the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (WoodChemPlus)

 

General objective of the project: to develop the research infrastructure at the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry, fostering the growth of a Centre of Excellence in three RIS3 areas in which LSIWC specialises:

  1. Knowledge-intensive bioeconomy,

  2. Photonics and smart materials, technologies and engineering systems,

  3. Biomedicine, medical technologies, pharmacy.

This will contribute to the strategic growth and international competitiveness of the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry.

Specific objective of the project: to acquire nine new, modern laboratory equipment units.

As a result of the project, the scientific capacity of LSIWC will be strengthened and the existing Bioeconomy Centre of Excellence further developed.

Total budget: EUR 1,023,182.00

Funding: CFLA (ERDF and state budget).

Call, Activity:
The WoodChemPlus project is implemented under the activity 1.1.1.2. “RIS3 Research and Innovation Centres”.

Project Implementation Progress

09 January 2026 – LSIWC is successfully continuing Project No. 1.1.1.2/1/25/I/003.

  • On 9 September 2025, an agreement was signed between LSIWC and CFLA on the implementation of the project, and on 17 October 2025 amendments were made to LG1, уточнив the project implementation period.

  • On 16 May 2025, the first piece of project equipment was purchased – an automatic isoperibol calorimeter.

  • On 10 December 2025, a contract was concluded with SIA Labochema Latvija for the purchase of a freeze-drying (lyophilization) system.

Currently, offers received under two procurement procedures are being evaluated for the acquisition of one quadrupole mass spectrometer and a chromatograph (HPLC) with ELSD and UV-Vis DAD detectors.

Procurement procedures have been announced for “Purchase of a laminar flow cabinet for laboratory needs” and “Design, manufacture and installation of a steam explosion unit within ERDF Project No. 1.1.1.2/1/25/I/003.”

A market consultation has been launched for the procurement “Purchase of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) for laboratory needs.”

The project is progressing according to plan.
