Laboratory of Wood Degradation and Protection

Wood is reborn from a classic value into a modern, healthy and sustainable building material for the living environment.

About the Laboratory

The aim of the Laboratory of Wood Biodegradation and Protection is to investigate and explain the processes of wood degradation and the possibilities of improving wood properties, providing fundamental knowledge that allows turning them into practical solutions for improving the performance, competitiveness and sustainability of wood and wood materials.

Keywords: coatings, composite materials, microplastics, restoration, wood aging, wood degradation,  wood materials, wood protection

Research Directions

  • Wood investigations - anatomical structure, identification of wood species (microscopy, qualitative analysis), application properties of juvenile wood, resinous wood properties, possibilities of reuse of wood building materials;
  • Investigations of the degradation of wood and wood materials - degradation under the influence of biotic or abiotic factors (fundamental studies), preservation of wooden heritage;
  • Improvement of the durability and usability of wood and wood composites (glued products, boards) - modification (thermal), impregnation, combined processing, innovative, incl. antimicrobial coatings from renewable resources (fundamental research), optimization of gluing processes;
  • Wood polymer composites (WPC) - innovative WPC compositions (modified wood, recycled plastics, additives), investigation of aging (abiotic and biotic factors), studies of the formation of microplastics, incl., form WPC (fundamental studies);
  • Environmental aspects of the products - product Life Cycle Assesment (LCA), Life Cycle Cost (LCC) assesment.
