Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC) is one of the leading wood and other biomass research centres in the Baltic region. The Institute was established in 1946, and it combines decades of science traditions with a dynamic approach to up-to-date trends in wood chemistry, green synthesis and material science.

More than 100 employees of the Institute represent various scientific disciplines, including, chemistry, biology and materials science. The main scientific directions of the Institute

  • wood materials
  • biorefinery
  • green chemistry and biotechnologies

are evolving, by combining fundamental and applied research.

In addition to research work, we cooperate with local and foreign producers to tackle the challenges of the industry. We have close cooperation with related research organisations around the world, the Institute's staff actively take part in international projects, staff exchange, and science communication events.

Our leading researchers give lectures to students in various universities, students regularly work on bachelor, master and doctoral thesis at the Institute. An active and vibrant work environment is maintained by the Student Council of the Institute.

The Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry is a state scientific institute under the supervision of the Minister of Education and Science, acting according to the Law of Scientific Activity and the Statutes of the Derived public person "Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry".

Mission

Development of competitive materials and products from wood and other biomass with scientifically based, environmentally friendly low-waste technologies.

Vision

Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry as a Baltic bioeconomy excellence centre will promote biorefinery as the backbone of future industry, and wood as a modern, sustainable building material, thus reducing the use of fossil resources and achieving Europe 2050 Zero Emission goals.
