Our vision

The Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry as a Baltic bioeconomy excellence centre will promote biorefinery as the backbone of future industry, and wood as a modern, sustainable building material, thus reducing the use of fossil resources and achieving Europe 2050 Zero Emission goals.

Research activity

The staff of the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry represent various scientific disciplines, including, chemistry, biology, materials science. The main scientific directions of the Institute are wood materials, biorefinery, green chemistry, which evolve by combining fundamental and applied research.

The research topics of the Institute mirror the versatility of nature, and find applications in different fields.

Our mission

is the development of competitive materials and products from wood and other biomass with scientifically based, environmentally friendly low-waste technologies.

Lecture: “Development of Waste Biorefineries Towards a Circular Bioeconomy”

Professor Carol Lin is a faculty member at City University of Hong Kong. She is a globally recognized researcher with over 20 years of experience in the fields of biorefinery, waste, and biomass valorization. Her research focuses on sustainable technologies for the production of chemicals, materials, and fuels, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of waste and promote the efficient use of resources. Professor Lin has published more than 240 scientific papers (SCI), co-edited five books, and contributed chapters to 30 other publications (h-index: 64; citation count: 13,500). She has been included in Stanford University’s list of the world’s most influential scientists (2020–2024) and, since July 2024, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). The lecture will take place at the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry, in the main hall on the 4th floor, from 10:00 to 11:30.

23rd Baltic Polymer Symposium (BPS2025)

The Baltic Polymer Symposium is a long-standing tradition that has brought together polymer scientists, engineers, and innovators from the Baltic region and beyond for over two decades. Latvian Circular Economy Forum 2025

On November 5, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, the Latvian Circular Economy Forum will take place – the first event of this scale in the Baltic States. The forum aims to bring together entrepreneurs, policymakers, scientists, NGOs, representatives of the creative industries, and young people to build a shared understanding and foster collaboration in the field of circular economy. At the heart of the event will be inspiring stories, panel discussions, and hands-on experience sharing, offering both a "big picture" perspective and concrete solutions – including valuable lessons from past challenges. The agenda is designed as a multi-voiced platform with parallel discussion rooms, an exhibition area, and informal networking zones.
