A Look Back at “Zaļā klase”: Forest, Knowledge and Ideas for the Future
On September 4, the fifth environmental education event “Zaļā klase”, organized by AS Latvijas Finieris, took place in Sarkaņkalns, Rēzekne Municipality. This year it brought together more than 1,500 students and teachers from different regions of Latvia.
Throughout the day, from 10:00 to 16:00, participants visited more than 40 information stands prepared by forestry and related sector professionals. Students had the opportunity to take part in educational and practical activities, learn about forest and land management, the use of wood resources, the protection of natural values, as well as the many professions and skills that shape a modern and sustainable economy in Latvia.
LSIWC participation
Our researcher Ph.D. Daniela Godiņa also took part in the event. The Institute joined forces with the Latvian Forest Industry Federation, sharing one tent and offering visitors insights into the possibilities of wood processing and the latest research developments.
For its active contribution, our Institute received a Certificate of Appreciation from AS “Latvijas Finieris”, recognizing close cooperation and investment in environmental education.

Security, technology and the future
This year, special attention was devoted to the field of military security. Participants learned about the work of NATO, the State Border Guard and the National Guard, viewed modern military equipment, and saw demonstrations of the latest generation of drones used for both security and environmental protection.
For the first time, the program also featured panel discussions:
In the discussion “Is There Life Without Wood?” industry experts, representatives from education and science, and opinion leaders shared their views on sustainable forest management. LVKĶI was represented in this panel by our researcher Daniela Godiņa.
The education panel addressed the topic “The Future Work Environment and Professions”, highlighting the importance of STEM in modern education and its links with the forestry sector and future development.
Both discussions were livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube.
Knowledge, inspiration and experience
“Zaļā klase” has already become a tradition marking the beginning of the new school year. Once again, it proved that learning in nature—meeting industry professionals and trying out hands-on activities—is an inspiring experience that helps students appreciate the value of nature, knowledge, and work.
