Nitrogen and phosphorus-containing biomass based activated carbons for fuel cells and supercapacitors
Project summary
The scientific purpose of the project proposal is to synthesize micro- and mesoporous carbon materials on the base of wood char and pulping residue, black liquor, using chemical activation with sodium hydroxide, dope them with nitrogen and phosphorus heteroatoms for the applications as electrodes in energy accumulation devices (supercapacitors) and in fuel cells to replace platinum as oxygen reduction catalyst.
Main activities of the project:
- Activation with the aim to synthesize micro- and mesoporous carbon materials for the further doping;
- Doping with heteroatoms;
- Study of the electrochemical properties of the synthesized materials.

Project duration: 30 months
Call, activity: Activity 1.1.1.2 “Post-doctoral Research Aid” of the Specific Aid Objective 1.1.1 “To increase the research and innovative capacity of scientific institutions of Latvia and the ability to attract external financing, investing in human resources and infrastructure” of the Operational Programme “Growth and Employment”.
Total eligible costs of the project: account for 11501.45 EUR EUR, including funding from the European Regional Development Fund in amount of 85 % – 94776.23 EUR.
