Innovative green extraction process, creating a new biorefinery cluster focused on phytochemicals and biomaterials production from underutilized woody biomass

Project summary

The aim of the project is to develop innovative MW water extraction technologies and hardware prototypes for more efficient processing of forest biomass waste, flexible variation of raw materials and high added value bioproduct portfolio, taking into account the requirements of the regional bioeconomy in the forest and market sectors, creating an increase in the knowledge and engineering capacity of researchers, students and industry professionals.

Main goals of the project:

  • The task of this project is to develop a new bio-refining cluster, providing residue-free processing of bark biomass (taking two tree species as an example: aspen and pine), obtaining valuable phytochemicals, which are very necessary for the application of various fields, and obtaining biofuel pellets from extraction residues.
  • These results will be important for the development of the Latvian forest sector - a leading sector of the national economy of Latvia, because the residues of the large-tonnage forestry wood processing industry will be converted into high added value products - phytochemical compounds and high-quality biofuel pellets for use in the energy sector.
