Project summary
The goal of the POLYMERS-5B project is to develop new alternative polymers synthesized from monomers obtained from renewable raw materials (diacids, diols, diamines, hydroxy acids, amino acids, aromatic and phenolic compounds, fatty acids, oils, furans) obtained from underutilized secondary generation (2G) raw materials, such as agricultural/food waste (tomato and olive waste) and biomass (wood pulp and lignin derivatives), following the cascade principle that food is primarily obtained.
The project will use biocatalysis and green chemistry processes to create new polymers from renewable raw materials such as polyesters and polyamides with functional groups (such as hydroxy, carboxylic acid, amine, epoxide, thiol, etc.), polyphenols and polyfurans that mimic the properties of fossil polymers (eg polyethylene terephthalate-PET, polyurethanes-PU, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene-ABS, amine and other polymer resins) aimed at improved biodegradability. These new polymers will be blended to provide valuable biocomposites and polymer materials for the textile, automotive, furniture and polymer resin markets.
