Over 120 Applications Submitted for the First “BioPhoT” Research and Innovation Project Call!

Yesterday, on May 8, the application period for the first “BioPhoT” Research and Innovation Project (RIP) call officially closed, with 122 submissions received — a strong testament to the high level of interest and the need for such a platform within Latvia’s science and innovation ecosystem.
Researchers and industry representatives from the RIS3 priority areas — biomedicine, medical technologies, pharmacy, photonics, smart materials, and engineering systems — are competing for a share of the €6 million funding pool. The project evaluation will take place in two stages: first, an assessment of innovation potential and market relevance, followed by scientific peer review.
The first-round presentations will be held from May 26 to 28 at the Science and Innovation Centre of Riga Technical University. The full presentation schedule will be published by May 21, which is also the deadline for submitting final presentation materials.
The list of expert panel members is already available on the platform’s website and will be updated shortly.
In this first call, each selected project may receive up to €200,000 in funding, with an implementation period of up to 12 months.
Two additional calls are planned by 2026, and the total BioPhoT funding will exceed €12 million. The long-term goal: to support the development of at least 35 new technologies by 2032, strengthening Latvia’s scientific and innovation capacity.
