Mycelium biocomposite developed by Ilze Irbe receives top prize in an international competition

The World Packaging Organisation announced the results of the international competition "WorldStar for Packaging" on 9 January, with the main prize going to Ilze Irbe, a leading researcher of the Cellulose Laboratory!
Ilze entered the competition with her work "Mycelium composite pellets for the protection of packaged products". These pellets are a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional packaging materials, made from fungi mycelium and hemp and/or wood residues. They are fully biodegradable and compostable, unlike synthetic foam packaging materials.
In 2023, Ilze's material won the Grand Prix in the national competition "Best Packaging in Latvia", organised by the Latvian Packaging Association, and was thus nominated for participation in the World Packaging Organisation's "WorldStar for Packaging" competition.
"WorldStar for Packaging is an internationally renowned competition that has been running since 1970. This year, 550 competitants from 40 countries took part. The award ceremony will take place on 30 May this year in Milan, Italy, during the packaging exhibition "IPACK-IMA".
