LSIWC participates in ZEST Project General Assembly in Germany

On 6–7 May 2026, the fifth General Assembly of the ZEST Project took place in Lübeck, Germany, bringing together project partners from across Europe. The meeting was also attended by research assistant Anastasija Šuleiko from the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry.

Representatives from the 12 partner organisations gathered to review the project’s progress, discuss the results achieved so far, and agree on the next steps for the project implementation. Over the course of the two-day meeting, participants discussed project progress and the latest technical developments, collaboration activities, sustainability aspects, as well as the potential market implementation of future innovations.

During the event, progress was presented across several project work packages, including bioreactor development, fungi fermentation processes, digital modelling, process monitoring, and safety and sustainability assessment. Discussions also addressed topics related to the alternative protein market and the future application potential of the project results.

In the final part of the meeting, participants took part in a practical exploitation workshop, where groups analysed potential applications of the project outcomes and explored future development opportunities.

What is ZEST?

ZEST aims to use fungal fermentation supported by digital modelling to transform lignocellulosic biomass into sustainable products for food, cosmetics, animal feed, and biomaterials.

The project is funded by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU), a €2 billion partnership between the EU and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC). CBE JU supports innovative, circular bioeconomy solutions. ZEST is one of the 30 new projects funded in 2024, which together have received nearly €200 million.
