LSIWC participates in the “Boost Pitch Perfect” event

The Scientific Director of the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC) and Head of the Polymer Laboratory, Dr. Uģis Cābulis, participated on 25 November in the Boost Pitch Perfect event in Brussels, organised by the Pilots4U by CoPilot initiative. The event brings together pilot plants, start-ups, industry partners and investors, creating opportunities for the development and commercialisation of new bioeconomy technologies.

Uģis Cābulis presented the institute’s expertise in a pitch session titled “Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry – your partner in biomass valorization in the Baltics” and took part in B2B meetings discussing potential collaboration pathways with other European participants.

Pilots4U by CoPilot is a Coordination and Support Action under the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking aimed at updating and expanding the European database of open-access pilot and demonstration infrastructures. The platform helps innovators access scale-up opportunities more efficiently — a critical step for transitioning bio-based technologies from the laboratory to industrial deployment. The project also includes community building, training programmes, seminars and activities that facilitate cooperation between innovators and infrastructure providers.

LSIWC is an active member of this community and continues to strengthen collaboration with European partners to advance biomass processing technologies and expand the institute’s engagement in pilot-scale infrastructure networks.

The Pilot-Scale Hangar at LSIWC provides an integrated technological environment that covers both raw-material preparation (coarse and vibrating mills, sieves, drying and vacuum systems) and biomass processing (extraction, impregnation, fermentation, carbonisation, electrospinning, cross-flow filtration), as well as conditioning and ageing equipment. This infrastructure enables process validation at TRL 4–6, from sample preparation to pilot-scale demonstration.

Opened in 2020, the Pilot-Scale Hangar is flexibly configurable, supporting experimental process development and collaboration with industry partners. The equipment is currently used in various ERDF, Horizon Europe and commercial projects, serving as an intermediate step toward full-scale industrial technologies.
