US4GREENCHEM

Combined Ultrasonic and Enzyme treatment of Lignocellulosic Feedstock as Substrate for Sugar Based Biotechnological Applications (US4GREENCHEM)

Project summary

The US4GREENCHEM project aims to develop a biorefinery concept for the complete valorisation of lignocellulosic biomass that is energy and cost efficient and based exclusively on green technologies. The concept includes mechanical pre-treatment of the substrate by ultrasound to overcome its resistance to different modes of action and to reduce inhibitor activity, gentle CO2 hemicellulose degradation and enzymatic sugars production, and technologies to convert by-products produced in the process into value-added products.

The project aims, from an environmental point of view, to develop a process that will minimise the production of by-products and waste. GHG emissions should be reduced by 30% compared to ethanol production from starchy products, which will be achieved by using renewable feedstocks and green technologies and by including the production of additional high-value products from the lignin fraction in the integrated biorefining approach.

US4GREENCHEM aims to create a biorefinery based exclusively on green technologies, with maximum valorisation of the biomass used. These technologies will be integrated in a compact process and the possibility of carrying out different processing operations simultaneously will be evaluated. This would significantly reduce the negative impact of the process on the environment and resource consumption.
