Towards Sustainable Polyurethane Solutions: BIODESIGN4INSULATION Consortium Visit to Türkiye

On April 24–25, 2025, leading researchers from the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry, Ph.D. Anda Fridrihsone and Ph.D. Mikelis Kirpluks, visited Türkiye to participate in the consortium meeting of the Eurostars project “Biodesign Of Polyurethane For Thermal, Acoustic And Damping Insulation Applications (BIODESIGN4INSULATION)”, implemented under the European Partnership “Innovative SMEs” activity.
During the visit, our colleagues toured the Kimpur production facility in Gebze and the Beko Research and Development Center in Tuzla, where they discussed the project’s progress and challenges and planned the next activities.
The objective of the BIODESIGN4INSULATION project is to develop polyurethane materials based on bio-polyols and bio-based additives for various applications, including insulation materials for refrigerators and pre-insulated pipelines, as well as the replacement of bitumen with polyurethane-based materials to improve acoustic comfort in dishwashers.
The project consortium includes four industrial partners:
- CELLMAT TECHNOLOGIES SL (Spain): An SME specializing in the development of foam formulations based on renewable raw materials.
- ABN PIPE SYSTEMS S.L.U (Spain): An SME and end-user, a manufacturer of pre-insulated piping systems.
- Kimteks Poliüretan Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş (Kimpur) (Türkiye): One of the leading producers of polyurethane systems.
- ARÇELİK A.Ş (Türkiye): A globally recognized manufacturer of household appliances (known in Latvia under the brands Beko and Grundig).
This collaboration covers the entire value chain of polyurethane materials, from bio-polyol production to the testing and validation of final products.
