The Next Generation of Researchers: Students Develop Bachelor’s and Master’s Thesis Research at LSIWC

During the 2025/2026 academic year, several students chose to develop their bachelor’s and master’s theses at the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC), taking important steps in their scientific careers and contributing to the next generation of researchers in the fields of bioeconomy, materials science, green chemistry, and biotechnology.

The students’ research covered a wide range of topics, from the utilisation of lignin and other biomass resources for the development of high-value products to biosorbents, sustainable food packaging, polyurethane foams, mycelium composites, and bio-based coatings for packaging materials.

Developing a thesis at LSIWC provided students with the opportunity to participate in real research projects, gain hands-on experience with modern analytical methods, and collaborate with experienced scientists.

As Viviana Līva Kalniņa, a graduate of the joint University of Latvia and Riga Technical University study programme Biotechnology and Bioengineering, noted:

“Developing my bachelor’s thesis convinced me that LSIWC is a great place to do research."

This academic year, the following students conducted their bachelor's thesis research at LSIWC. Research supervisors are listed after each student:

  • Anna Rēzija Āboltiņa – Arnis Āboliņš, Rihards Klīga
  • Poļina Kuzmina – Arturs Vīksna, Galija Šuļga
  • Līva Pētersone – Matīss Pāls, Arturs Vīksna
  • Alīna Stolere – Kalvis Liepiņš, Agnese Ārāja
  • Rūta Alma Vicinska – Kristīne Meile, Agnese Ārāja
  • Valērija Svinticka – Oskars Bikovens, Inese Filipova
  • Emīlija Skrupska – Ilze Irbe, Ģederts Ieviņš
  • Viviana Līva Kalniņa – Ulla Milbreta

The following students conducted their master's thesis research at LSIWC. Research supervisors are listed after each student:

  • Vanesa Dhalivala – Uģis Cābulis, Arturs Vīksna
  • Ksenija Radovska – Māris Lauberts, Arturs Vīksna
  • Mikus Kampuss – Ilze Irbe

We congratulate all students on the successful defence of their theses and thank the supervisors for their contribution to the development of the next generation of researchers. We wish all graduates success in their future studies, research, and professional careers.
