Signing of a memorandum on the establishement of a biorefining ecosystem

On June 18, Uģis Cābulis, deputy director of the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry, signed a cooperation memorandum to promote the processing of biomass into energy and various consumer products in Latvia.

Biorefining is a set of technologies that enables the replacement of fossil resources with renewable resources for the production of various valuable products and reducing the ecological footprint. The Latvian bioeconomy already makes a huge contribution to Latvia's manufacturing industry, providing 125,000 jobs, and it has great growth potential.

The memorandum was signed by 22 partners, and it envisages cooperation between entrepreneurs, scientific institutions, public administration, and supports the development of new value chains in order to double the size of the national economy based on sustainable technologies.

The Institute of Wood Chemistry is one of Latvia's oldest scientific institutes with decades of experience in the rational use of timber and other biomass. As one of the most important players in the Baltic bioeconomy, we are ready for effective breakthroughs in the development of biorefining.
