Scientists’ Breakfast: Synergy of Innovation between the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry and Riga Stradins University

How is the future of science created? What happens when wood materials meet medicine, microbiological knowledge intersects with bioengineering? We explored answers to these questions on April 2nd during the event “Scientists’ Breakfast,” where, for the first time in this format, researchers from the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry and Riga Stradins University came together.
It was more than just a morning coffee with colleagues – it was an epicenter of ideas and discussions, where minds merged like a chemical reaction.
The event was opened by RSU Vice-Rector for Research, Prof. Agrita Kiopa. This was followed by presentations of research directions, active discussions, and thematic working groups, laying the groundwork for future scientific collaboration projects.
Scientists explored cooperation opportunities in four thematic working groups:
- Biorefinery Laboratory
Dr. sc. ing. Jānis Rižikovs and Dr. sc. ing. Aigars Pāže presented research on patented birch bark extracts, supramolecular gels, and emulsions as a pathway to novel therapeutic approaches. - Bioengineering Laboratory
Dr. sc. ing. Oskars Grīgs introduced studies encompassing microbial cultivation, bioreactor-based fermentation, and the development of antimicrobial solutions—seeking common ground with RSU’s competencies in microbiology and toxicology. - Natural Bioactive Compounds
Dr. sc. ing. Sarmīte Janceva and Dr. chem. Māris Lauberts discussed naturally-derived bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. The discussion was actively joined by the Scientific Director of LSIWC, Dr. sc. ing. Uģis Cābulis. - Wood-based Bone Implants
The focus of this group was the use of wood as a material for bone implants – wood as part of the human body. Dr. chem. Laura Andže led an engaging discussion on the potential revolution in implantology.
During the working group sessions, participants discussed current research topics and technologies, identified new synergies for collaboration, and exchanged ideas for joint project development—reshaping the perception of science’s boundaries.
Following the discussions, participants of Scientists’ Breakfast had the opportunity to explore the scientific infrastructure of Riga Stradins University. Guided by laboratory head Konstantīns Logviss, our researchers visited the Laboratory of Finished Pharmaceutical Forms – one of the most advanced units of the RSU Faculty of Pharmacy.
The excursion served as an inspiring conclusion to a morning that united scientists with a shared goal – to foster new collaborations and give fresh horizons to innovative ideas.
