Professor Carol Lin will visit the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry to give a lecture on the circular bioeconomy and biorefining.

Professor Carol Sze Ki Lin, at the School of Energy and Environment, City University of Hong Kong (CityU), is a distinguished leader in the fields of waste-based biorefineries, biomass valorisation, and sustainable technologies. Over her two-decade career, she has championed the development of circular bioeconomy approaches that transform organic residues into valuable chemicals, materials, and fuels, thereby significantly reducing environmental burden.

Prof. Lin has authored more than 240 peer-reviewed journal papers in high-impact outlets such as Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, Chemical Society Reviews, Energy & Environmental Science, and the Chemical Engineering Journal. Her work has accrued over 13,500 citations, yielding an h‑index of 64, evidencing the global relevance and influence of her research.
She gave around 100 oral presentations including 12 key-note and several plenary lectures in the following countries: Australia, Belgium, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Serbia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, the UK and USA.

In addition to her peer-reviewed output, Prof. Lin has co-edited five books, contributed to over 30 book chapters, and holds several patents, underscoring her role in advancing the theory and practice of biorefinery. Among these are Waste Valorisation: Waste Streams in a Circular Economy and Handbook of Biofuels Production, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary, scalable solutions.

Her outstanding contributions have earned her a place among Stanford University’s list of the world’s top 2 % scientists (2020–2024) (CityU). Among her many distinctions, Professor Lin has received some of the most prestigious awards in the field of sustainable chemical engineering and bioresource valorisation:

  • in July 2024, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) — a highly esteemed recognition of her outstanding contributions to the chemical sciences.
  • Her pioneering work in waste-based biorefineries has also been honoured with Gold Medals at the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva (2018 and 2024), as well as a Jury’s Commendation in 2016, acknowledging the real-world impact of her innovations.
  • She was awarded the MilliporeSigma Green Chemistry Education Challenge Award in 2024 for advancing sustainability in chemistry education,
  • and received BESS Achievement Awards in 2016 and 2018, which recognise excellence in bioenergy and biorefinery research in Southeast Asia. (CityU) (Royal Society Of Chemistry

In addition to these, Professor Lin has received numerous other institutional, regional, and international awards, all of which reflect her sustained leadership, innovation, and global influence in sustainable science and education.

During her tenure at CityU, Prof. Lin has secured over HK$33 million in research funding and led more than 30 integrated projects, encompassing valorisation of agricultural, food, plastic, and textile waste. Her group has advanced pilot-scale biorefineries, assessed techno-economic feasibility, and demonstrated real-world implementation of circular frameworks.

Beyond research, she is a valued editorial leader, serving on editorial boards for journals such as Chemical Engineering Journal, Biochemical Engineering Journal, and Sustainable Energy & Fuels, and guest-editing special issues for Green Chemistry and Journal of Hazardous Materials.
