A Partnership That Advances Industry

Construction continues in Bolderāja on the first lignin-based resin flagship plant in the Baltics. The Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC) is proud to contribute to this innovative project as a scientific partner in the VIOBOND consortium.
Our researchers collaborate with leading bioeconomy companies from five EU countries to:
- develop industrially scalable technologies based on wood-derived lignin,
- significantly reduce the use of fossil-based phenol and formaldehyde in synthetic resins,
- support the commercialization of sustainable lignin-phenol-formaldehyde (LPF) resins.
The structural frame of the new facility is complete, and installation of large-scale equipment has begun. The plant will feature unique, world-class technologies based on the valorization of biorefinery lignin.
This is more than just a factory – it is a science-industry collaboration shaping a greener and more competitive Latvian bioeconomy.
The project is coordinated by Latvijas Finieris, with Dr.sc.ing. Janis Rizikovs leading the work at LSIWC. It is co-funded by the HORIZON 2020 programme (No. H2020-101022987).
