New International Collaboration Opportunities: LSIWC Joins the GREEN-CHEM Network

On 31 May 2026, the annual General Assembly of the international GREEN-CHEM network took place in Leuven, Belgium. The Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC) was represented at the event for the first time by its Scientific Director, Ugis Cabulis. Participation in the General Assembly represented an important first step in LSIWC's involvement in the GREEN-CHEM network, which brings together universities, research organisations, and companies with a shared goal of advancing sustainable chemistry and fostering international collaboration.

"For many years, LSIWC has been conducting research in the fields of bioeconomy and sustainable materials. Joining the GREEN-CHEM network opens new opportunities for collaboration with leading researchers and organisations across Europe and beyond, strengthening our contribution to the development of sustainable technologies, processes, and materials," says Ugis Cabulis, Scientific Director of LSIWC.

GREEN-CHEM (Global Green Chemistry Network) is an international collaboration network coordinated by Ghent University. It serves as a platform for knowledge exchange, the development of joint research initiatives, and stronger cooperation between academia and industry. The network's activities include collaborative project development, researcher and student exchanges, scientific knowledge sharing, and the organisation of international events.

The key priorities of GREEN-CHEM – sustainable chemistry, circular economy principles, and the efficient use of renewable resources – closely align with LSIWC's research activities in biorefining, green chemistry, and biotechnology.

During the General Assembly, network members reflected on progress achieved to date, aligned on next steps, and reinforced collaboration across the network. The meeting also highlighted the importance of cross-project collaboration in accelerating innovation and strengthening the societal and industrial relevance of research.
