Documentary Film “The Molecule of Wood” Explores the Development of Wood Chemistry and Its Future Potential

With support from the State Forest Development Fund, a new documentary, The Molecule of Wood, is being made to explore the sustainable use of wood resources and Latvia’s potential in the circular economy. The film is being produced by the creative agency Ai Production Latvia on commission from the association Latvijas Koks. The Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC) is also involved in the project.

From Wood Chemistry’s History to Today’s Scientific Achievements

At least 40 minutes long, the film will tell the story of wood chemistry in Latvia, from its historical roots to today’s scientific achievements and current research challenges. Filming will take place in research laboratories, manufacturing facilities and forests, featuring the work of scientists, experts and industry professionals. The film will show how science and technology can help make better use of wood resources and support the shift from fossil-based to renewable resources.

Specially developed visualisations and animations will help make complex chemical and bioeconomy processes easier for a wider audience to understand.

LSIWC and Industry Partners

Several LSIWC researchers will also take part in the film, sharing insights into their research, their views on the future of science and their goals for the years ahead.

Other organisations involved in the project include Latvijas Finieris, Riga Technical University, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, Latvian State Forests, Fibenol and other representatives of the sector.

Inspiring Interest in Science

The film will help audiences understand the role of wood chemistry in Latvia’s economy and bioeconomy, while exploring wider bioeconomy trends in Europe and around the world. It will also serve as an educational resource, encouraging young people to take an interest in chemistry, science and careers in the forest sector.
