There is great pressure from consumers and legislation (e.g. EC Landfill Directive) for food processors to reduce disposal of co-product wastes, which are biologically complex, environmentally unfriendly, and often microbiologically unstable. REPRO addresses all requirements of T6.6 Recycling and upgrading organic wastes from the food chain in environmentally friendly food production. New methods will be developed to upgrade large, poorly addressed waste co-products [vegetable trimmings and spent grain], t o higher-value materials and to utilize whole waste. This involves:
(a) integrated procedures for ensuring microbiological safety, stability and traceability of co-products;
(b) development of tailored bioprocesses for precisely extracting and modifying waste co-products / components;
(c) integration of the bioprocesses with advanced extraction, filtration and drying technologies.
Novel, hybrid methods and processes will deconstruct co-products into defined and marketable product streams while ensuring water recycling. Outputs will include pharmaceuticals, food ingredients and feed ingredients. Exploitation will be maximized by carrying out risk analysis of consumer/retailer acceptance, technological feasibility, economic viability, environmental safety and legislative compliance. This follows the fork-to-farm principle and contributes to Area 5.4.6. The interdisciplinary, trans-sectorial and problem-solving collaboration of world-class research organizations (science and industry) from the EU and Candidate Countries will contribute to development of an integrated ERA, and enhance the standing of science as a career. Dissemination across the food industry and consumer/retailer sectors will involve development of Stakeholder Interaction Platforms and a Brokerage Platform. REPRO will last 3 years; its IMPACT will be sustainable.

Considering that (i) one of the most serious problems facing the Mediterranean Region is related with water due to the limited amount of natural water resources and the fact that neither the increase in population of this region nor the foreseen climatic c hanges are going to contribute favourably to improve the regional situation as far as water is concerned and (ii) improving the water consumption by users and uses and plant breeding for efficient water and nutrient use is one of the areas addressed in the Call (INCO-2002-B. 1.2) together with water treatment (INCO-2002-B. 1.3) the objectives of this Proposal are: (i) The development of selective polymeric materials (cheap to produce) for desalination of seawater, post-irrigation water and soil with the aim of developing a most effective technological approach than the existing ones. (ii) The use of biotechnological modes and means for promoting efficient and nutrient use of water by plants, improving their immunity and resistance towards diseases and droughts. To achieve these objectives the following steps are to be undertaken. Step 1. Selection of main strategic cultures of three Mediterranean Countries as Pilot sources for vegetation experiments based on socio-economic importance, crops quality and structure, agronomical, agrochemical and climatic conditions of their cultivation. Step 2. Synthesis, characterisation of calixchitin polymers for desalination of seawater, post-irrigation water and soil, followed by their application at Laboratory and Pil ot Plant scale. Step 3. Qualitative and quantitative assessment of the industrial potential de-sorption solutions resulting from sea, post-irrigation waters and soil. Step 4. Design of material phenylpropanoid polymeric derivatives with the capability to f unction as a plant growth regulatory, fertilizers, quality enhancers for the protection of crop quality and productivity under drought conditions. Step 5. Combinati.

The knowledge-based economy and RTD ask for an appropriate mobilisation of human resources. The researchers‘ mobility within the ERA will be one of effective solutions for this task. The Latvian Researchers Mobility Centre (Latvian RMC) operating within the ERA-MORE will be organised at the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry, which is contractor of project RESMOB-LATVIA. To improve the situation and conditions regarding researchers‘ mobility, during project realization the following results will be achieved: establishing of the specialised Latvian Researchers Mobility Portal (Latvian RMP) in English and Latvian acting in cooperation with European RMP; establishing of a national-scale mobile researchers support system to provide personal assistance through the central Help desk or through advisory bodies with trained personnel and contact persons circle on the site (universities, scientific centres, etc.); organising of an information dissemination channels around the Latvian RMP; preparation and continuous up-dating of information dossiers, which will reflect all issues regarding incoming, outgoing and returning mobile researchers (legal and administrative regulation, daily life issues); popularisation of the targets and activities of ERA-MORE in society, especially in researchers‘ community. To support the achieving of these goals, appropriate market and promotion activities towards researchers and employers will be carried out to recruit new users of the offered services and partners of co-operation. A national steering group, composed of intersectional experts, will be set up to analyse the situation of researchers‘ mobility and its obstacles, and the preparation of recommendations for policy makers and institutions responsible for the policy realization. The public relation activities and Latvian conference on mobility issues will allow a dialogue on the whole spectrum of questions regarding mobility.

NILE is a 4-year integrated project addressing the topic "New and advanced concepts in renewable energies - Biomass". Its overall objective is to develop cost effective production of clean bioethanol from lignocellulosic biomass (LCB), enabling its use as a transport biofuel. NILE will develop, investigate and evaluate new technologies for efficient conversion of lignocellulose to bioethanol. These technologies will be verified using a unique and fully integrated pilot plant providing reliable data for glob al socio-economic and environmental assessments and for the design of a future demonstration unit. The activities of NILE aim at overcoming critical hurdles in process development. Key issues are: - decreasing the cost of enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocell ulose to fermentable sugars using new engineered enzyme systems; - removing current intrinsic limitations in the conversion of fermentable sugars to ethanol by i) constructing inhibitor-tolerant pentose-fermenting industrial yeast strains, and ii) combinin g fermentation and saccharification; validating the engineered enzyme systems and yeast strains in a fully integrated pilot plant using softwood and wheat straw as model feedstock. Validation includes all process steps and recycling of process streams; - analysing socio-economic and global environmental impacts of the production and use of bioethanol from LCB based on the new data obtained; - dissemination and training of target groups. The project mobilizes the critical mass of end-users and world-leadi ng expertise necessary to improve the whole bioethanol from LCB chain. By its integrated structure, NILE supports the development of research activities in close connection with industrial processes, their validation, their technical and socio-economic ass essments, their dissemination as well as training activities. This development ensures a real industrial and societal impact of the developed technology thus strengthening European competitiveness.
