Importance of Genetic Factors in Formation of Forest Stands with High Adaptability and Qualitative Wood Properties

Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC), as a co-operation partner, participates in the ESF activity "Involvement of human resources in science" of the project "Importance of Genetic Factors in Formation of Forest Stands with High Adaptability and Qualitative Wood Properties", which has been implemented by the Latvian State Forestry Research Institute “Silava” (http://www.silava.lv/) since 1 December, 2009.
 
The aim of the project is to combine the competence of the applicant institution - „Silava” and the partner institution - LSIWC in forest science, chemical engineering and biological fields, involving young specialists and foreign experts for comprehensive evaluation of the effects of genetic factors on the enhancement of the adaptability of pine, spruce and hybrid aspen and the upgrading of the wood properties. LSIWC is involved in the implementation of the project’s activity 2 “Genetic determination of wood properties”, during which the chemical and physical properties, paper pulp yield, biological resistance, etc. will be analysed.
  
A total of 18 full-time equivalent researchers are involved in the implementation of the project, and its progress is scheduled up to November 2012 at “Silava” and LSIWC, and in experiments all over Latvia.
